Update: Woman Sentenced To Leave Her Home

Karen Noyes, the Yachats, Oregon woman who was convicted of feeding bears on her property on Yachats River Road and thereby endangering others, has been sentenced.

In a ruling that seems not only bizarre but illegal or unconstitutional, Karen Noyes was ordered to leave her home for three years, stay away from the property and in fact, stay away from a seven mile part of the road in the area. Noyes is appealing, she insists Fish and Game never told her not to feed the bears and in fact, when she called them for help with the bear problem, was not given any advice or support.

I don't know enough about that to have an opinion, and I do know that the bear problem in Oregon, as all over the country, is a big one. Bears have been increasing in their numbers in terms of proximity to human habitats. And it's downright dumb, reckless indeed, to feed bears as she was doing. By doing so, Noyes attracted numerous bears to her property, and surrounding homes, and endangered herself and others.

But the sentence seems Draconian. Where is she supposed to live? What's to be done with her home? Noyes doesn't have a lot of money, and she's 61 years old. To expect her to leave her home is ridiculous, and the ruling is chilling in its ruthlessness.

A bizarre story.

Unbelievable! This is over -reactionary tyranny, not justice.

I agree. I'm looking out for updates, etc. In our local paper a woman who is an attorney wrote a letter to the editor about this, and is working on her behalf. I'll post the link to the letter when I dig it up.
